2009 Team Rider Profile: Carrie Crook

Carrie on the beach Which boardsports are you into and when did you start?

Surfing: I tried to get into it in 1992, but I had a difficult time because I was on the wrong equipment. When I moved to San Diego in 2002, I was able to focus more and dedicate the time to actually catch some waves.

Which would you like to learn and why?

I would like to try kiteboarding.  It just looks like good fun and a total rush!

Describe your first surfing session

I don’t think I ever made it to the line up. I just got caught inside and got worked for 2 hours.

Where and why did you start

La Jolla, California. I thought it was a requirement if you live in California to be able to surf! (ha, ha). It was always a dream of mine. It is just not a sport, it is a lifestyle.

Think of a great water sesh you’ve had recently. How did you feel after?

I always feel good after a session, even if the waves weren’t that great. I just love the whole experience of it. Loading up the car, driving to the beach, meeting some friends, hanging out in the line up, and catching some waves…that’s what it’s all about! The drive home is always great. I feel recharged!

Ever compete? Wanna try?

No, but I think it would be fun!

Wahine Wisdom for newbies:

Never give up!! The first year is rough, but if you stick it out and put the water time you’ll be surfing in no time!

Favorite non-wahine activities:

Spending time with my husband, gardening, being on the water, hiking, and painting furniture.

Where have you traveled to windsurf/surf/kite?

Southern California, Florida, Virginia, and South and North Carolina.

Describe the best trip you’ve taken in the last 3 years (doesn’t have to be water related).

Acadia National Park, ME. I love to hike steep hills and still see the ocean! Great views!

Name a few wahines who have influenced you.

Before meeting anyone or being a Wahine, I met Pinky. I have never met anyone so devoted and stoked about surfing. She is an incredible inspiration to get me out there and make the drive!

After I first joined the Wahines, I met Des. I remember meeting her in the water and she said that she had already been windsurfing and kiteboarding that day! And there she was surfing! I just think it is incredible that she does it all!

Now, after meeting more of the women from CCW and being on the water with them, they are all an inspiration. The energy and the passion they all have for their sport is inspiring.

Why are you stoked about the CCW?

It is so nice to be involved in such a wonderful group of women. It is great meeting up for a surf, hanging in the water, and being totally comfortable. It really makes surfing more enjoyable! I have also made some great buddies from being in the CCWs

Where would you like to see the CCW a few years from now?

A Costa Rican line-up.

Your personal water goals for 2009?

Maybe switch over to a fish or nose-riding. I guess I could work on both!
